Review:I remember my time in Timberlake Job Corps very fondly. It was 1979 and I had recently just turned 19. I'm from the midwest city of Rockford, Illinois, (located 90 miles northwest of Chicago near the Illinois Wisconsin border), and I remember asking precisely to be sent as far away from home as possible. I was young and full of adventure and couldn't wait to see the world. I obtained my GED at Job Corps,( I took my tests at Salem Community College), and enrolled in the Culinary Arts program there. I worked very hard and soon rose to the position of shift leader in the kitchen. The teachers and students were great. Waking up in the fresh mountain air was also great. There wasn't a lot of extra curricular activities though. There was a small rec center with a pool table and a little PX center where we could spend some of our monthly stipend, which was $18.00 a month in 1979. We could also cash in any pop cans at the PX that we came across and receive 5 cents for every can. We also had a gymnasium but that burned down while I was there. I still remember the planes flying overhead and bombing the blaze with the reddish color sand or whatever it was they used on fires. I made a lot of friends at Job Corps. We used to take weekend passes to Portland and some of the surroundinf towns. I remember we used to do a lot of hitchhiking around the area because we didn't have much money. The world seemed a lot nicer and more innocent back then. There are so many fond memories of my time there that It would take too much space to list here but a few highlights are noteworthy. Little did I know my next experience would turn out to be my last week at Timberlake. It was Forest Fire Season in the North West and a big fire was raging in Washington State. They needed camp crews desperately to help set up camps and maintain them and also to feed the firefighters. I was asked if I wanted to go and spend a week on a camp crew. I agreed and as soon as I passed my endurance test I shipped out for the fire region. As soon as we arrived at the base camp we were given our orders to ship out to a satellite camp. It was located approximately 20-25 miles away and there were no roads going there so we were flown in by helicopter. I remember we used to receive our supplies by mule train every morning. It was a grueling 7 days. We worked from the time we woke up until the time we went to bed. I received the compensatation $450.00, ($4.50 x 100 hours worked), from the Department of Agriculture. It took about three months until I received the check though, which was sent to my Rockford home. As soon as I returned to Timberlake I was told to pack my bags because I was shipping out to San Francisco. I was to be in the first group of students to help open up a new Job Corps Center located at Treasure Island Naval Base. I was surprised and overwhelmed. The bad thing about this whole situation was that my best friend at the center had just left to work on a camp crew the day before I came back. We vowed we would always stay in touch, but the only thing I could do was give my hometown address to one of my roommates and ask him to pass it along. I don't know if he ever got it or what, but we never saw or heard from each other again. So is the way with young people it seems. You make a lot of friends and over time you lose a lot of friends. When I first arrived at Treasure Island we the students were assigned an old naval barracks to live in. There weren't even any beds in the there. So the first thing we had to do was clean up the old barracks and get some bedding from a storage facility. After that came the kitchen. That was a mess also. So, we had to spend time getting that together so we could start our training. I was young and restless though, because after all I've been through I decided after 3 weeks, (it was supposed to be a 3 month program), at Treasure Island I wanted to quit and be on my way. To this day I still regret my foolish actions. Oh yeah, I've had pretty much a good life since then but I can't help but look back at certain defining points of my life in retrospect about the way things were and could have been. My review of Timberlake is a whopping 10. Even though I didn't go on to work in the Culinary Arts field, I came away from the whole experience a great deal wiser and a whole lot stronger. Someday I hope to visit the center again and also to visit that part of the country that left a lasting impression on my mind and my soul.
